W hen the heatwave strikes, your first instinct to cool off is to turn on the AC. But say that you don’t have one or you simply don’t want to spend a fortune on the electricity bills just to make it through the torrid heat waves. What are you to do in this situation? Well, it’s pretty simple – use a fan. While the fan doesn’t actually lower the temperature but rather produces an airflow that cools you off when it hits your skin, it’s still a much more efficient method to get past summer without amping the bills.

Among the latest types of fans to grace us with their cooling breeze when summer comes is the tower fan. As the name suggests, these fans are slim and tall, resembling a tower. What makes them so popular isn’t only their modern, discrete design but the considerable airflow produced, as well as the wider range of features they integrate (some models even feature ionizers to clean the air in the process). In the following, we will review the best tower fans at the moment to help you find the right product to spend your money on and keep cool when the heatwave strikes.

How to Cool Down the Room Using a Fan

As we previously explained – the fan doesn’t actually lower the temperature. This is something only an air conditioner can do. What the fan does instead is create a cooling breeze via the airflow it produces. When the breeze hits your skin, you are bound to feel significantly more comfortable. But are there any methods that you can use to literally cool down the room using a fan? The most well-known trick is to use the air conditioner and fan together. The AC releases cold air that the fan helps spread around the room more efficiently. In turn, you won’t have to turn the AC temperature as low and the unit won’t work as much to maintain thermal comfort indoors since the assistance of the fan increases the air conditioner’s temperature reduction prowess. There are several other tricks that you can use to cool the room, this time without relying on another device except for the fan. These include:

  • Frozen bottles: Freeze and empty 1-liter plastic bottle. Put it on a tray and cover it with a damp cloth. Then, place it in front of the fan. This way, the breeze formed by the fan is cooled by the frozen bottle, reducing the temperature in the room as a result.
  • Ice bucket: You can turn the fan into a veritable improvised AC by simply placing a bucket of ice in front of it. The air will pass over the ice, becoming very chilly. As it circulates throughout the room, it helps the temperature drop and keeps you feeling cool.
  • Crosswind: When evening comes and the temperature outside becomes bearable, open the windows in the room and place the fan facing out of one of them. This way, the fan will help push the heat out while cold air comes in. If you prefer this method, for added efficiency, we recommend using a second fan that you place inwards to amp air circulation in the room.

Are there kids or pets in your household? Then you should look into a bladeless fan instead since the lack of blades makes it a safer option.

While most fans might look alike and use the same type of technology in their quest to deliver the cooling breeze you sorely need, this Dyson fan makes quite a neat exception due to its innovative features and futuristic look. It relies on the Air Multiplier technology to ensure maximum efficiency in its performance. It is a tall unit that measures 7.5” wide by 4.3” deep by 39.36” tall and comes in a wide range of colors, including silver, blue, or black with a metallic finish.

Smart and Innovative

What everyone can agree on is that, at first glance, this unit looks more like a decorative piece than a fan. However, looks are deceiving, especially considering just how efficient this fan gets. It integrates a large base that holds it sturdy in place and guarantees it will not tilt over. This bladeless model uses cutting-edge technology to draw air into an aperture, and multiply it to generate cool air, all without utilizing rotating blades to impede incidents in case kids or pets reside in your home and often pass by the unit.

  • Mixed Flow Impeller – This technology is often found in jet engines and turbochargers. It has 11 asymmetric impeller fins that maximize efficiency. Moreover, each one has a serrated trailing edge that minimizes noise
  • Airfoil-Shaped Ramp – The air is accelerated over the airfoil-shaped ramp to maximize the airstream
  • Air Multiplier – Increase the airstream by 15 times

Mention-Worthy Aspects

  • Clean – Even though dust is prone to collect on it, you can simply wipe it off with a damp cloth
  • Energy-effective – It draws 10% less power than any other model
  • Safe – The absence of fast-spinning blades makes it a safe option for households with kids and pets

Versatile and Convenient

There are 10 speed levels provided to tailor its operation, downplaying power waste contingent on the setting you opt for. It can circulate over 1,200 cubic feet of air per minute in a room, meaning that it handles large areas with ease and provides cooling in a short amount of time. Some of its particularities comprise:

  • Aerodynamic diffuser – Efficiently controls the airstream while upholding an unobtrusive operation
  • Brushless DC Motor - You can calibrate it as you deem fit since you are not limited to a single-speed setting. It generates power while maintaining an energy-effective operation
  • Programmable – You can set it to turn off after 9 hours tops of uninterrupted operation

Highly Efficient and Practical

For increased efficiency, it integrates oscillation that you can manage at the push of a button. This feature makes it revolve around its axis to disseminate the air more effectively. The maximum oscillation angle is 90 degrees. All the selections are made using the remote since the unit itself only features an On/Off button. It is simple to utilize and maintain, only requiring routine cleaning, which isn’t much of an effort since it is a bladeless fan. In case any issues arise or it malfunctions, you can benefit from the 2-year assurance that accompanies it to be granted free repairs.

A viable alternative for the tower fan is the pedestal fan. Get one instead if you want to better control the airflow and the direction in which it goes since pedestal models are more versatile when it comes to operation customization.

This model takes its name seriously, as it boasts one of the biggest heights seen in tower fans, reaching 41 inches. It’s also slim, ideal for small areas where you couldn’t normally fit an oscillating fan. Speaking of which, this one rotates 180 degrees around its axis, managing to spread the current of air on a wide surface.

All the controls are positioned on the top, right within your reach, and you can easily select one of the three fan velocities or set it to work uninterruptedly for 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours. There is also an Auto mode that has it running at pre-set speed and time. Even if you don’t set the timer for a specific period, learn that the fan will stop working after 12 hours, to prevent overheating and to ensure it will not waste energy. Also, the display gives a current temperature readout, making it easier for you to monitor the ambiance.

Don’t worry about the cord getting in the way, as the base has a unique storage function that retracts the cord so it will not pose a risk of slipping. Also, at the back of the housing, you will find a convenient spot for holding the remote, to make sure it will always be accessible.

  • Speeds – With three levels and an Auto mode, it is easy to set it to function at the desired intensity
  • Oscillation – While some models only rotate at 70 or 90 degrees, this one performs a 180-degree rotation
  • Timer – You can set one of the 4 time intervals

It’s fairly silent, creating around 45 dB at the lowest speed and a top 60 dB level at the highest, so it can be a good choice even for a bedroom or office as it won’t make disturbing sounds. The protection policy differs from one country to another, but America and Europe are mostly covered by 2-year protection.

Aside from a powerful operation, it preserves quietness, which makes it a feasible option for use in multiple spaces, including the office where you need a silent environment to work, or the bedroom where you sleep and evidently cannot doze off if there’s racket around you. The QuietSet technology allows you full control over the sound and cooling options so that you utilize the unit year-round. If you don’t mind some extra noise but you want a more powerful fan that circulates the air at a higher rate, then we recommend the Honeywell Hy 048bp Fresh Breeze. It’s the best alternative from the same manufacturing company. It might be considerably noisier, but it serves its purpose fine due to the 710 CFM airflow capacity.

Due to the oscillating function, you are guaranteed that there won’t be any hot spots left behind as the air louvers cover the entirety of the space. The 90-degree turn and reversing capability provide fresh and cool air for the whole living space.

  • Speeds– Select the operating level that brings you the most comfort as there are 8 options integrated
  • Control Panel – The 5 light selections include 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, and off
  • Safe – The wide 10” base holds it steady in place, while the fused safety plug impedes hazards related to running it
  • Area Coverage – 600 sq. ft.

The timer can be set to 8 hours tops, and when the selected option runs out, the unit turns off. Lastly, you can effortlessly reposition it using the integrated handle that offers a good hold over the unit.

Performance Test Feedback

I got this fan about three months ago and I’ve been using it daily throughout summer. When I assembled the Honeywell HYF290B, I snapped the two base parts together and removed the locking nut from the base. Then, I threaded the cord through the base and placed the housing on it. Finally, I threaded the cord through the locking nut and twisted the nut onto the base until I heard a click sound that indicated the two were properly joined. Since I got it, I pretty much played around with all the timer and fan speed settings. I usually keep it on the 6th fan speed because the highest is more powerful than I need. What I can assure you of is that it’s quiet at all speeds, even the 8th and highest. Even at the lowest speed, you can feel the airflow just fine, but I’d recommend that setting if you use it in the bedroom while you sleep. The oscillation is very pleasant, it has quite a wide reach. I usually only turn it on when I have guests over. I live alone with my dog, so I usually prefer to keep the cooling breeze on me when it’s on. During the heatwaves, I did use it together with the AC to save money on air conditioning. Last year, I really took a big hit when the electric bills came for the summer months. Not this time though, the Honeywell fan really helped out and I didn’t have to run the AC as much due to it. I explain more about my journey in the review, check it out if you want a more detailed analysis of this powerful Honeywell tower fan.

Tower fans are not only about style, their efficiency when it comes to cooling you off matters just as much, if not more. This Dreo model is one of the best in both departments since aside from the impeccable aesthetic that is typical for a tower-style unit, it provides a high velocity of 24 ft/s to rapidly distribute the airflow around the room. Best of all, it does all this at a smaller price compared to most of the more expensive products you find at the moment.

It is rated at 390 CFM on the highest of its 6 speed settings. The noise-canceling airflow implies that it keeps quiet no matter how much air it’s circulating. For example, at the lowest speed it produces only 34 dB, while at the 6th and highest speed, it produces 48 dB. Since it’s rated to draw only 45 watts when it runs, it’s safe to call it energy efficient. To add to this, we mention that it features a 12-hour timer that further helps lower running costs since the fan won’t operate longer than it’s strictly needed thanks to it.

There are 3 running modes to pick from, namely:

  • Auto mode: adapts the running speed of the fan to the room temperature;
  • Normal mode: alternates between low and high speeds to simulate natural breezes;
  • Sleep mode: turns the display off after 15 seconds and lowers the fan speed gradually to make sure your sleeping environment isn’t disturbed by the unit.

It features a carry handle that you grab to effortlessly relocate the unit whenever needed. It oscillates 90 degrees to spread the cooling breeze throughout the room as much and as effectively as possible. For convenience in use, an intuitive-to-use remote is included to change settings without having to get off the couch. When it comes to backing, the product is protected by the manufacturer for 1 year. When this period ends, repairs are supported by the user.

7. Black+Decker BFTR146

Summary: Black+Decker graces us with its presence, this 46-inch tall tower fan the renowned company manufactures being a staple of reliability and air circulation consistency. It includes a remote, so if you’re a couch potato, you won’t have to move when you want to dim or amp up the running speed. In terms of features, it comprises a useful 12-hour timer that lets you set the running schedule you prefer while limiting expenses.

15 Best Tower Fans to Keep Cool During Heatwaves

Pros:

  • Tall 46-inch model with a slim profile – space-saving design
  • 3 running modes for customization – Normal, Natural, Sleep
  • Set it to oscillate to expand the air circulation area

Cons:

  • Unless you activate the Sleep mode, the display stays on
  • Reports of the fan reacting to TV remotes

The slim design of this 46-inch tower fan from Black+Decker combined with its increased air circulation capabilities makes it a perfect option for any area you can think of, including rooms in your home, the garage, or even the office. As expected considering that it’s one of the higher-ranking products available, the freestanding floor fan features oscillation that you can opt to turn on or off. Therefore, you can either choose to push the air in a specific direction or let the fan oscillate and spread it around the room evenly. Moreover, it features a 3-speed control that lets you pick just how much air it pushes out.

It’s a 7.9-pound heavy unit that you won’t have trouble relocating due to the lightweight design. Sure, it might not have a handle like the Ozeri 3X does, but it’s almost half the weight of the aforementioned model, so it’s safe to say the lack of a handle isn’t a big loss. We must also mention that a lot of users reported quite a strange occurrence – the fan reacts to their TV remotes. We advise that you keep the fan remote in your proximity if there’s a TV in the room where you’re using the air circulator because you might experience the same issue – the fan might turn off when you use the TV remote.

Turning back to the positive aspects, aside from the 3 speeds, this Black+Decker features 3 running modes. Customize the air circulator’s operation in a more convenient manner by picking between Normal, Natural, and Sleep, whatever mode suits the situation at that given moment. When used in Sleep mode, the display backlight turns off. So, if you want to get rid of the pesky light to get some shuteye, this is the operating mode you must pick. To make sure you won’t misplace the remote, there’s special on-board storage for it. To end on a high note, we mention that the manufacturer backs it against defects for 1 year.

It asserts a classic design that makes it a suitable match for any interior décor, but it might be hard to fit into a modern, sophisticated house. It integrates a large front grille that delivers a powerful air blast and a wide base that averts the risk of tipping over easily when you pass by and touch it.

  • Height - Stands 42″ tall, dispensing the cool air over a hefty area
  • Safety Plug - The electric current will be cut off if the fuse inside of the plug has detected hazards
  • Speeds - 3 integrated settings; even on the top setting it stays quiet
  • The nighttime setting decreases the speed throughout the night and dims the indicator lights
  • It’s energy-efficient as it comprises a 7.5-hour auto shut-off timer
  • ETL listed - safe to run even when it is unsupervised
  • Includes a multi-functional remote
  • Air Ionizer – Tackles removing impurities from the air to create a healthier, safer living space. If you want a most budget-friendly fan that comprises an air ionizer, then check out the Sunpentown SF-1521
  • No Ozone - The ionizing feature purifies the air without producing any harmful ozone, so you will enjoy both cool and clean air using only one system

The 1-year assurance might seem short but it is pretty standard with these products. Nevertheless, since this product is manufactured by Lasko, a reputable brand in this business, we are certain that it likely won’t require repairs anytime soon.

No other fan looks like this one, so you can say that you have found the most interesting and out-of-the-ordinary appliance that can easily double as a piece of decoration. The top part is a tube with air outlets that let the airflow into the room, while the lower conical part rotates to maximize air spreading. And thanks to the incorporated dust insolation, the air will remain free of nasty allergens.

It puts 9 airflow settings at your disposal, making it so easy to find the intensity that feels most comfortable. Also, it has 3 modes with pre-set speeds, each ideal for a certain part of the day. The Nature mode sends a cool breeze at any of the 9 levels you pick, the Strong offers continuous cool air, while the Sleep is perfect for nighttime, as it operates at a low noise of less than 30 dB.

  • Speeds – 9 integrated options to select from
  • Oscillation – Moves 90 degrees to convey cooling over a widespread area evenly
  • 3D Cooling – You will barely feel the draft it creates

Best of all, it excels even when it comes to power draw seeing how it only draws 7 to 25 watts, contingent on the selected working speed. It pulls the air at the bottom and passes it through a 4-stage purification process, so apart from the cooling breeze, it cleanses the air so that you enjoy a healthier living environment.

  • Timer – The maximum setting is 8 hours
  • LED Touch Screen– Provides a more intuitive means to modify settings as you wish
  • Remote Control – Change the operating modes, speeds, and swaying from up to 10 meters away

It even integrates the Night mode which, when activated, dims the lights and lowers the speed to let you sleep in the same room without any disturbance.

Summary: With a powerful motor and a large air outlet, it manages to cover large areas with a stream of cool air. It’s not very tall, so it has to make up for the fewer inches, to make sure it will be up to par. Although great for the bedroom due to its size, it might seem a bit too loud to have it running through the night.

15 Best Tower Fans to Keep Cool During Heatwaves

Pros:

  • The backlit display lets you see the settings even in darkness
  • Great quality-price ratio
  • The ionizer is a nice addition, especially if you value clean indoor air
  • The large grid on the front lets out a large amount of cool air

Cons:

  • It is increasingly loud as you set the speed higher
  • It reportedly makes an annoying click while oscillating

Although rated as a tower fan, it’s not the tallest you could find, but it sure is one of the most powerful out there. It measures only 33” high but boasts a large grill at the front that lets out an impressive amount of air. Add to that the 70-degree rotation and you will have a cooling aid for the hot summer days. Even as it spins, it will not risk tilting over as the base measures 12” wide, enough to keep it firmly on the ground even if you hit it.

Three speeds are available, each releasing a certain amount of air per minute, going from 480 on High, to 338 on Medium, and 205 on Low. You can set it to work for certain periods using the timer setting that extends to 8 hours tops.

  • Ionizer– it releases clean air into the air to intensify the feeling of freshness. Don’t worry about potential side effects as it complies with the zonal ozone emissions limit
  • Silent in use – the Low setting generates only 52 dB, so it will not bother you while you work or sleep
  • LCD screen – the top has a blue LCD that clearly displays the settings to make it easier for you to maneuver it. It can be turned off at night

While guaranteed to operate flawlessly, it also includes a protection policy for the first year that covers repairs and expenses with parts and labor.

It comes at an inexpensive price and comprises numerous features that will surely advantage you. The digital display makes it simple to use even by those who are less tech-savvy. All of the needed hardware is included to set it up yourself with ease. The oscillating feature enhances its area coverage as it consistently distributes cold air throughout the room.

  • Speeds - It comprises 3 speeds to tailor its operation as you like at any given moment
  • Night Mode – If lights distract you, use this setting as it turns off the digital display screen
  • Remote Control - Modify the settings from afar using this included accessory
  • Stable - It sits 42” off the ground with the pedestal attached
  • Sound Level - It has a discreet operation to not distract you when sleeping or doing daily activities
  • Indicator Lights - It comprises pointer lights and a digital display

You also have the option to assemble it without the pedestal, in case you don’t want it to be that tall, in which case it will sit directly on the base, enjoying more stability. Woefully, this product doesn’t impress much when it comes to warranty. The producing company only has it covered for 120 days, which is insignificant as opposed to the assurance provided with other models.

This 40-inch tower fan from Pelonis might not be the most discrete of the products we reviewed since it’s a bit bulky, but the overall design is pleasant to the eye, so this shouldn’t be an issue. If you prefer a slim-profile fan, we recommend you look into the ULTTY CR010 instead. The base is a bit wider, true, but it’s a bit more compact overall and it has a more interesting design too.

Turning back to the product we’re currently reviewing, the Pelonis PFT40A4AGB, what we consider to be its biggest advantage stands in the 19.7-inch air outlet that provides wide-angle cooling when you activate the 90-degree oscillation function. So, you don’t have to settle for spot air circulation, but instead, let the fan spread the air over a wider surface for added comfort. If you like to have control over your devices, you’ll be pleased to know that this product provides just that. Aside from the aforementioned oscillation that you can turn on or off to your liking, it features a 15-hour timer that lets you decide beforehand for how long the fan should run. This also adds to the product’s energy efficiency, considerably reducing running costs.

A remote is included with the package. We are not big fans of its design because it doesn’t match that of the fan itself, but this isn’t a big hang-up. On the plus side, the remote communicates with the tower from up to 16 feet away. Therefore, you can change settings using it even if you’re on the opposite side of the room. For safety in use, the product features a fused safety plug that protects from power surges and over-voltage damage. Keep in mind that this is an ETL-certified product, so all materials used to manufacture it are safe and qualitative. Speaking of manufacturing, the company warrants it to be free of defects within the first year of making the purchase.

This 43” tall fan distributes cold and fresh air to make the surroundings feel considerably more comfortable. Considering that it doesn’t make much noise in the process either, it’s easy to see why most buyers use it in their bedrooms and offices. The slim, low-profile design ensures it takes up negligible space while uniformly dispersing the air in the chamber.

Since this is a bladeless fan, it is safe to operate around kids and pets. It features 3 running speeds and 3 wind modes, letting you decide exactly how it should run. Moreover, you can turn the 70-degree sway function on or off as you prefer. The timer function it comprises can be set for 7 and a half hours tops, and it comes in handy if you want to cut on running costs. It even features a 2-way direction airstream, so the air is uniformly spread throughout the room to eliminate hot spots.

When used in Sleep mode, the air circulation speed gradually rises and lowers to ensure your sleep won’t be disturbed. The running mode we like most is Natural Breeze because it produces a similar cool feel to what you experience when you’re outside. With the package, you get a remote with a 20-foot range to more conveniently adjust settings from afar. In terms of backing, the manufacturer has it covered against defects for 1 year, which is pretty standard.

Alternative Tower Fans Worth Checking Out

We considered quite a few products for the making of this top, models that we rounded up with the help of our consulting experts and after going through hundreds of online reviews to see what tower fans customers favor. Of the bunch, the previously reviewed 15 models are the best money can buy, hands down. However, we did leave out a few products because they came from the same brand as some of our top picks, with the models that we ended up selecting for the main ranking scoring slightly better in performance tests. If you are interested in researching a few more cash-worthy options, check out the following lines. Here, we briefly go over the alternative models that you should look into if you don’t find what you need in our top or if you simply want more products to compare before you decide.

15 Best Tower Fans to Keep Cool During Heatwaves

#1. Ozeri 3X

Check Price at Amazon
A 5,000 CFM fan that combines hefty air circulation with a stylish design. Thanks to its performance, the 3X from Ozeri is one of the best options for drying, ventilating, or cooling larger spaces in your home. We touched on its design at the beginning because while the product’s performance might be a whopper, so is its look. This tower-style unit is only 3 inches thick, which makes it one of the thinnest products in its category. The reinforced glass base stand is a plus on its own since it makes this 44-inch tall fan look apart in any décor. Another design decision that Ozeri got right is the canted shape of the blades. Thanks to their curvature, when the blades spin, they produce less noise while highlighting the naturally soothing sound of the produced airflow. Turning back to performance, since it features 3 independently controllable fans with 3 speed settings, the 3X model provides a total of 9 customizable cooling levels to pick from. The unit oscillates 90 degrees for optimal air circulation and room coverage. You have 3 airflow patterns available with this product, each suited for specific situations that include sleep, comfort, and relaxation. Needless to say, the 7.5-hour timer that you can set in 30-minute increments is a notable feature since it doesn’t only expand your control over the product but helps save on running costs. When it comes to controlling it, you can either use the included remote to change settings from afar or go all the way to the unit and switch speeds or modes using the touch-sensitive LED control panel.

Why we chose to leave it out: The 3X costs more than our runner-up, the Ozeri OZF5, without bringing enough extra perks to justify the price difference. In fact, on paper, since the OZF5 oscillates 360 degrees while the 3X oscillates only 90 degrees, our runner-up is a bit better, at least feature-wise. In terms of performance, both are rated the same for their air movement capacity, so it’s a draw from this point of view.

15 Best Tower Fans to Keep Cool During Heatwaves

#2. Ozeri OZF1

Check Price at Amazon
The ultra-slim tower design of this Ozeri fan makes it a favorite for fancy resorts since its mere presence enhances the surrounding décor. Furthermore, since it generates 5,000 cubic feet per minute airflow, there’s no denying that it is up for the most demanding applications you can think of. It features a multi-colored LED display where you can check the room temperature and settings. If you mind the light, you can always dim it so that the display won’t distract you during nap time if you’re using the fan in the bedroom. A feature that comes in handy for multiple reasons is the 12-hour timer since it saves on running costs by reducing the unit’s power draw while also enhancing your control over the fan. Speaking of control, there are 3 pre-programmed airflow patterns that you can pick from, so you can use it in whatever mode seems most convenient at the moment, whether it’s sleep, relaxation, or comfort. You can switch between airflow patterns and operating speeds either using the control panel buttons or the large-range remote. It’s whisper-quiet on all 3 speed settings, and what we especially like is the 90-degree oscillation since it grants full room coverage.

Why we chose to leave it out: If you are to find the OZF1 model on sale at a reduced price, it would be the better option over the Ozeri OZF5. However, if you compare these two Ozeri products at full price, the upgraded OZF5 version is the option to go for. Moreover, the power draw of the OZF1 is slightly larger than that of our runner-up. While the difference isn’t huge, we factored this aspect into our decision-making process.

15 Best Tower Fans to Keep Cool During Heatwaves

#3. Vornado 173

Check Price at Amazon
Design-wise, this Vornado model might be one of the best thought-out products we tested. This is all thanks to the V-Flow circulation that ensures the high volume of air continually moves around the room. So, as opposed to oscillating models where you feel the cooling breeze for a few seconds, then move on before it hits the spot where you are sitting once more, with the 173 you feel the breeze without interruption. There are 3 speed levels to pick from, each with its own airflow rating. Additionally, it moves 322 CFM of air at the highest speed, which makes it perfect for air circulation or cooling in smaller spaces. Another handy feature is the 8-hour timer that helps reduce energy costs. To control the unit’s operation, you can either push the afferent buttons on the fan or use the included remote that has a sufficient 70-foot range. There’s even a special cradle on top of the fan where you can put the remote when it’s not in use to avoid misplacing it. Since we are in the design segment, we also want to mention that the base doesn’t wobble as it does with other models. Furthermore, it features an integrated carry handle to make relocation much easier.

Why we chose to leave it out: It has a lower air movement capability compared to the Vornado 184. This is why we decided to only include the 173 model here as an alternative for those who want to buy from Vornado but don’t need as large space coverage as provided by our 4th-ranked pick.

15 Best Tower Fans to Keep Cool During Heatwaves

#4. Honeywell Hy 048bp Fresh Breeze

Check Price at Amazon
Honeywell knows how important a product’s design is, which is easily seen in the interesting look of the Hy 048bp that goes perfectly with any décor. One of the most interesting aspects stands in the customizable fan height. When you assemble the unit, you can either opt for 32-inch or 40-inch height by simply adding the base extension or leaving it out. As with most models, it can oscillate for greater air distribution, an option that you are certain to use when you have guests over to make sure that everyone feels comfortable. One thing that you won’t ever have to worry about with this product is power consumption since it doesn’t draw much energy to run, to begin with. Additionally, it features a 12-hour timer that further helps save on running costs by limiting the time the unit stays on to what’s strictly needed. You have full control over the temperature that the fan should help reach, and you can also check at a glance on the display the current room temperature. Options are provided even when it comes to airflow. There are 3 speed levels (rated at 750 CFM on the highest setting), as well as 2 breeze modes. Inside the unit, you find a dust filter that helps keep the internal components safe while also clearing the air of impurities. Since the filter is washable and reusable, you won’t spend money on upkeep. Last but not least, a remote is included to operate the unit without having to move an inch from where you’re sitting.

Why we chose to leave it out: While it surpasses the Honeywell HYF290B in terms of air circulation, the Hy 048bp is a lot noisier. In fact, it’s one of the loudest fans we tested for this article. Nevertheless, if the airflow capacity of this alternative Honeywell model is what you seek, you should give it a go. Although we recommend that you use it for spaces like the living room, for example, rooms where you don’t mind appliances that make a bit of a ruckus.

15 Best Tower Fans to Keep Cool During Heatwaves

#5. Honeywell Comfort Control Fan

Check Price at Amazon
The slim design of this Honeywell fan combined with the hefty air movement capacity and reasonable asking price makes it one of the most sought-after products at the moment. What the manufacturer emphasized most when designing it was versatility in use. And this is best seen in the customizable settings. For one, you have a timer that you can set for 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours. After your selected time passes, the unit automatically turns off to help save on operational costs. Another feature that gives you control over its operation is the selectable running speed. With this model, there are 3 options to pick from. Additionally, there is the oscillation function that you can turn on or off depending if you want greater air distribution or spot cooling. To make your job as easy as possible when you move the fan from one room to another, not only does it weigh little, but it features a recessed carry handle that you can grab onto. Lastly, when it comes to operating it, the process is overly simplified by the LED touch button electronic controls on the unit.

Why we chose to leave it out: The air louvers got stuck a few times during our tests, which obviously gave us an alarm signal. While this might have been an isolated issue, we don’t want to take chances when it comes to the products we include in our top. This is why the Honeywell HYF290B is in our main ranking instead of the Comfort model since the former didn’t have any problems during tests. Moreover, both are fairly similar in terms of air movement, so it’s not like you would have seen a considerably more rapid cooling if you were to pick the Comfort model.

15 Best Tower Fans to Keep Cool During Heatwaves

#6. Lasko Wind Curve 4924

Check Price at Amazon
Design-wise, the Wind Curve 4924 is among the bulkier models we reviewed, so expect it to occupy more space than most of the other fans that we recommended in this article. But this doesn’t mean it’s an eyesore, far from it considering the modern look it flaunts. One of the best features seen in this model is definitely the patented Blue Plug technology typical for Lasko products since it prevents safety hazards by automatically turning the unit off when a potentially dangerous electrical fault is detected. The feature that customers have come to expect from modern tower fans by this point, namely the oscillation function, is also present with the Wind Curve. Turn the oscillation on when you don’t want spot cooling but rather a more ample cool air distribution. Thanks to the directional louvers, you can further direct the airflow where you need to in the room without having to change the unit’s position altogether. It features 3 speed levels for customized cooling. Another notable feature is the recessed handle that makes it easy to move the fan from one room to another. Last but not least, since it comes fully assembled, you just take it out of the box and plug it in for use, that’s it. No time is wasted on setting it up whatsoever.

Why we chose to leave it out: While it produces slightly heftier airflow compared to the Lasko 2554, the Wind Curve 4924 consumes more power when it runs. This threw us off a bit, obviously, so we decided to include the former in our top instead of the latter model. However, we encourage you to decide between the two depending on your expectations performance-wise, budget, and design preferences.

15 Best Tower Fans to Keep Cool During Heatwaves

#7. Lasko 2510

Check Price at Amazon
The slim design and clean lines make this Lasko model one of the preferred options for customers who seek a stylish means of indoor ventilation or cooling. It comes at a cheap price, which also helps boost its popularity among buyers. It’s pretty standard when it comes to features. As with most units, it provides 3 running speeds to select from. Of course, there’s the oscillation function that you can turn on when you want greater air distribution in the room. Just like the Lasko fan we previously covered, it features the Blue Plug technology that guarantees safe use by turning the unit off when an electrical fault occurs. There’s even a 7-hour timer that reduces running costs to a minimum, ensuring that the fan won’t operate for longer than you need it to. The power cord is 6 feet long, so chances are that you won’t need to use an extension cord for powering it. Furthermore, a remote is included for convenient control of the settings from afar. When you’re not using the unit, you can put the remote control in the special storage spot on the fan to avoid losing or misplacing it.

Why we chose to leave it out: While this particular Lasko product is just as energy-efficient as the Lasko 2554 that we ranked 8th, it moves less air is comparison. This doesn’t make the 2510 a poor quality product, it just makes the unit a better fit with customers who don’t need as hefty air circulation as provided by the 2554 model.

Buying Guide

Not all models are built alike. Some integrate more features that aid in boosting their performance than others. To know what to look into when searching for the right tower fan, check out the following features and functions:

  • Oscillation

It helps disseminate the cool air uniformly throughout a larger-size area as the unit will revolve around its axis. Contingent to the oscillation degree, it manages to spread more cool air to increase the feeling of comfort in the house.

  • Programmable timer

Instead of letting it run around the clock and paying a ton of money when the bills come, look for this feature that grants you control over the amount of time the unit runs. The larger the span is, the better, as you can completely tailor its operation. (Note: What is truly advantageous with this function is that the fan shuts off automatically at the end of the designated time.)

  • Adjustable speeds

Given that it releases cool air into the area, you must make it work rendering to your needs at any given moment to create a suited ambiance indoors. The adaptable speeds are what provide this full control over the system and help minimize energy consumption.

  • Remote control

It is a worthwhile element to look into as it grants a more convenient means to regulate settings to your preference, enabling you to do it from afar rather than always having to go all the way to the unit to make changes accordingly.

  • Noise level

The last thing you want is to end up with a noisy unit that you can’t sleep, work, or even sit in the same room with. The lower the decibel level it produces, the better, as it can be utilized even in rooms like the nursery or bedroom where you need silence.

  • Ionizer

While not mandatory, it’s a setting useful to have. It augments the unit’s usefulness seeing how, aside from cooling the room, it will clear the air of harmful allergens and dust mites. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, this feature protects you from unwanted symptoms.

Tower Fans vs. Pedestal Fans

Considering buying a room fan but you don’t know what standing type is better for you, the tower or the pedestal? Then let’s compare the two and see which type prevails as the winner when it comes to different points of view. This way, we hope to help you reach a clear decision regarding what you should buy.

  • Air circulation: Pedestal fans are the superior of the two when it comes to airflow since model models are rated at a few thousand CFM, whereas there are fewer tower fans that pack serious air circulation capabilities (the Ozeri OZF5 rated at 5,000 CFM airflow is one of these models).
  • Features: Extra features always add to a product’s appeal. Whether the functions extend the product’s usability or enhance its basic capabilities, features are always welcome. Pedestal fans are pretty basic from this point of view, generally not integrating much except for multiple running speeds and oscillation. On the other hand, tower fans like the Sunpentown SF-1521, Honeywell Hy 048bp Fresh Breeze, and Lasko 2554 integrate an ionizer that removes dust, pollen, and other impurities from the air to leave it cleaner and fresher.
  • Airflow control: Since you can adjust the height, oscillation, and direction of the pedestal fan, airflow control is clearly superior when compared to tower models that usually only provide oscillation control.
  • Airflow output: Pedestal models have bigger blades, which results in a higher airflow created. On the other hand, the space through which the air flows isn’t very large with tower fans. This evidently limits the output.
  • Noise level: Pedestal models are the noisier of the two because of the larger amount of airflow they create. If you want to enjoy a cooling breeze in the most discrete manner possible, we recommend that you go with the Honeywell HFY290B that only produces 41 decibels.
  • Design: When it comes to aesthetics, the clear winner is the tower fan. With slim lines and generally more variations in terms of shape and size as opposed to their pedestal counterparts, tower models are the better option design-wise.

…and the winner is: Well, it’s actually a tie. You find quality fans on both sides when it comes to power and airflow control. Pedestal fans are indeed generally better suited for larger spaces, but this doesn’t mean that you won’t find a tower fan with the same capabilities. The same can be said about features. Tower fans might pack more of them and might flaunt the more modern design, but there are more than a few pedestal fans that break the mold and integrate newer technologies. In the end, it’s all about preference – look into both types, analyze the best models available for each of these two categories, and stick to the product that best complies with your needs and expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the quietest tower fan?

The Honeywell HYF290B is the quietest model available at the moment. Even on the 8th and strongest running speed, it’s barely audible compared to the other fans. Evidently, the lower you go on the ladder when it comes to speed, the quieter it gets. Rated at approximately 41 decibels, it’s the perfect bedroom or office fan since it won’t pose a distraction.

Is a tower fan better than a normal fan?

While regular fans are generally more powerful when it comes to the airflow they create and the pace at which they circulate the air, this doesn’t mean that all tower fans fall short. There are more than enough products that generate quite a hefty airflow, like the Dyson Air Multiplier AM07 that is rated at 1271 CFM. What makes tower fans superior overall, however, is that they comprise more features that add to their efficiency and effectiveness. Some of these features include timers, ionizers, oscillation, and more.

Are oscillating fans effective?

We do recommend that you opt for a fan that incorporates the oscillation feature because it does indeed amplify operational effectiveness. When there are several people in the room, if the fan doesn’t oscillate, the ones who are not sitting in the direction of the air stream won’t feel the cooling breeze much. However, with the oscillation feature turned on this won’t be an issue since the air stream will blow from side to side.

Do tower fans use a lot of electricity?

To give you a clearer picture of just how money-saving tower fans are, know that they consume almost the same amount of electricity as standard light bulbs do. Compared to the tower-style fan, the standard air conditioner consumes at least 10 times more electricity.

Is it safe to leave the fan on all night?

As long as you are smart about how you use the fan, there’s no problem with leaving it on overnight. If you use it in the bedroom, make sure that the fan is directed away from your body. Otherwise, the blowing air will cause dry skin and you are likely to catch a cold too. You should also consider running it at a low speed or programming it to operate for only a few hours instead of the whole night to avoid spending too much money on electricity bills.

Do tower fans reduce humidity?

If you place the fan in the proximity of a vent so that the circulated air reaches the exit destination quicker, it can indeed help reduce humidity. Since the fan moves the air, it speeds up the evaporation process so that the air becomes a bit drier.

What is the best tower fan brand?

There are quite a few brands that produce high quality tower fans for large consumption, namely:

How do I increase room airflow without a fan?

  • Open the vents and registers for the air to travel where it should normally go;
  • Check for cracks and leaks in the HVAC system and fix them if that’s the case;
  • Install a ventilator to get rid of the stale air and amp airflow.

Is it cheaper to run the AC or the fan?

Fans are significantly less expensive to run, but it’s not a fair comparison considering that the two do completely different things. The air conditioner specializes in lowering and regulating the ambient temperature, while the fan moves the air in the room. When the breeze hits your skin you do indeed feel cooled off, but the temperature in the room isn’t affected. If you want to be responsible with your money, we recommend using the fan and AC together. This way, you won’t need to crank up the air conditioner as much to achieve the same thermal comfort indoors since the fan will circulate the cool air throughout the room to make the whole process more efficient, having you feeling comfortable at a fraction of the cost running the AC alone would.
